Spike Seymour’s ‘plop art’ took the Exmouth Art Trail by storm last year - but now the five-year-old aspiring fossil hunter has branched out into the Jurassic period with his drawings.

The Beacon Primary School pupil, who wowed trail-goers with his detailed images of animals going to the loo in 2016, has moved on from his signature drawings to explore a more patterned and coloured style of art, which sees dinosaurs and birds from his perspective.

Shy Spike, who has made around £300 selling his work, said: “I hope everyone will see them.”

His mum, Amanda, 47, said: “Last year during the art trail, when people passed the door and they didn’t come in, Spike chased them down the street and told them to come in.

“Spike likes making people laugh doing silly things.

“He calls himself an artist. At the moment, when he grows up he’s either going to be an artist or a fossil hunter.

“He was doing a lot of line drawings for most of last year, but most recently he has discovered colouring in.”

Spike got involved with the Exmouth Art Trail last year after Amanda contacted its curator, Anna FitzGerald.

Amanda, an illustrator, said: “We will try and steal the show again. He was very excited about the whole experience last year.”

Spike’s dad, Jack Board, 59, added: “Spike’s art reflects something he is completely into.

“He’s colouring in, in great detail.

“I think every so often he sees a bit more detail and progresses from two or three colours to five or six.”

Exmouth Art Trail curator Anna said she was delighted to see Spike taking part.

She added: “Spike brings an enthusiasm to the trail that no other artist can.

“All the grown-ups love his fun lines and quirky subjects, but what is really important is he encourages other children to step forward and be taken seriously.”

Spike’s artwork will be on display at a pop-up gallery at 44 Bicton Street, Exmouth, from Saturday, May 27, to Saturday, June 3.
