VISITORS to Newton Poppleford were treated to some of the countryside's finest traditions and skills when some of the county's top sheep shearers and sheep dog handlers went head-to-head in a competition.Organised by the Devon County Show committee, the Ashtree Farm one-day event gave visitors a glimpse of rural life as a number of classes - from novice to advanced - were held throughout the day.As well as showing off the skills and strength of the sheep shearers battling to remove the most fleeces in the fastest time, the sheep dog handlers gave visitors a demonstration of the unique relationship between man and dog needed to control a flock of sheep.Shepherd Graham Hill said: "No quad bike, vehicle or bag of feed can replace the instincts of a border collie working as one with the sheep and the shepherd.
