Sewer water had to be pump out of a Topsham charity shop this morning (Tuesday, November 27) after a drain became blocked.
According to Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, a drain has overflowed into the Devon Air Ambulance Trust Vintage and Variety shop, in Fore Street.
A fire engine from Middlemoor was called out at around 11.40am and used a mini ejector pump to clear between two and three inches of ‘surface and sewerage’ water from the shop.
South West Water also attended and police were requested to close Fore Street.
A spokesman for SWW said: “A blocked sewer has caused flooding at a property on Fore Street, Topsham.
“We have cleared the blockage and the floodwater is now subsiding. The fire service is assisting.
“At this stage the cause of the blockage is unknown.”
Chrissie Peel, retail operations manager at DAAT, said the water has gone in through the walls, lifted some of the floorboards in the shop and all of the bookcases have been water damaged.
The shop will be closed for the time being however the other DAAT shop in Topsham is trading as normal.
