East Devon Heath Week offers us all an opportunity to explore our local environment, learn about the fascinating creatures who live there and have fun at the same time. The programme starts on July 27 with a Heathland Festival at Woodbury Castle, where you can find out more details about what's on offer. The programme is very varied and designed to appeal to people of all ages and interests. If you want to know about birds, butterflies, reptiles or pond life - experts are on hand to guide you around and explain what is there. For the very energetic there are opportunities for mountain biking across the heaths by day or by night. Early risers can enjoy the magic of a heathland morning with a possible sighting of the elusive Dartford Warbler and the prospect of a BBQ breakfast. For those who prefer a more leisurely pace, there are opportunities to learn willow weaving or try your hand at being a landscape detective. The final event, Goodnight Heath Week, on Friday, August 1, offers an introduction to bats, moths, nightjars and the eerie world of the night time heath. The full Heath Week programme leaflet is available in your local library. Many activities are free but booking is essential for most events so why not sign up for some of these special activities which are right on your doorstep and happening soon. The RSPB, Devon Wildlife Trust, the AONB and the Pebblebed Heaths Conservation Trust work together with EDDC to provide these events. Visit www.eastdevonaonb.org.uk or www.rspb.org.uk
