Police are hunting a thief who broke into a safe at the Savoy Cinema last week and made off with around £400.

The incident happened in the early hours of last Friday morning. Police say an unknown male gained access through the rear door of the cinema, in the Strand Gardens, and accessed the safe, before making his escape the way he entered.

Police are currently obtaining CCTV footage of the incident and carrying out further enquiries.

The cinema had to cancel its first screenings on Friday while police worked at the scene, but it was back open later the same day.

Manager Lyndsay Clarkson said: “There was fairly minimal damage – we had to repair the door that they came in through, and we need a new safe.

“They didn’t trash the place – they knew what they wanted and they came and got it.

“We use the night safe at the bank for takings, so all they got was the floats for the tills and spare change, which was about £400.”
