A signed rugby ball is being auctioned off to raise funds for a project to improve East Budleigh’s village green.

The auction of the ball, signed by the 2017 Premiership-winning Exeter Chiefs squad, was launched on Bay FM by members of the village green committee.

A couple committee members joined DJ Howard James on his show to talk about the project and the progress so far.

In the last 12 months, nearly £85,000 has been raised to help regenerate the green following a public outcry.

Phase one of the project has now been completed and the committee is now looking towards phase two.

It is hoped the second part of the regeneration could include a French boules court, monkey bars and climbing tree trunks.

The committee is now inviting members of the community to bid in a silent auction for the signed ball.

Tony Rowe, chief executive and chairman of the chiefs, said: “As a group of trustees, we were all very excited about the plans for the bandstand and the village hall which were outlined in the initial application.

“To see how our funding will now help create a vibrant, social hub within the village, helping bring together people of all generations, is simply fantastic.

“We have no doubt that the projects will help to enhance the whole village and we’re delighted to have played our part in supporting a very worthwhile cause.”

The ball was donated to East Budleigh Village Green at an afternoon tea event held to celebrate completion of the first phase.

Previously, The Journal reported that the Chiefs donated cash to the project, helping to reach a then target of £35,000.

The rugby club also funded the refurbishments made to the village hall and the installation of a covered seating area.

People have until Sunday, November 5, at 6pm to bid on the ball.

Anyone who wants to put in a bid should email info@ebvg.org.uk. All money raised will go towards the East Budleigh Village Green project.
