A 'vicious' unprovoked assault on a Royal Marine hero who had just returned from Afghanistan has led to an urgent police appeal for witnesses.

The Royal Marine suffered injuries to his face and body after he was attacked in the Magnolia Centre on Sunday August 21 between the hours of 10.45pm and 11.15pm.

Detective constable Peter Childs of Exmouth CID said: “The victim was a serving Royal Marine Commando and was in Exmouth having recently completed a tour of duty in Afghanistan.

“The offenders are thought to be two local males and are reported to have punched and kicked the victim to the floor causing injuries to his face and body.”
