As a former Liberal Democrat Parliamentary and recent county council candidate, I feel bitterly let down by the dropping of the commitment by Devon County Council to reopen Rolle as a post 16 college.

Soon after the election in June, I attended Exmouth Town Council as a member of the public and asked the question: "Can we expect the same degree of cooperation with Exmouth and its town council from the new Conservative-run county council as from the previous Lib Dem council?"

I was assured by the mayor that as far as was known, John Hart, Devon's new Tory leader, was committed to Exmouth.

I am sure I felt the same disappointment as many Exmouth people when Mr Hart told us (Journal, September 24) that "we are not forgetting Exmouth - you have the children's centre, oh, and the Strand Redevelopment".

Frankly, these are already announced (and, in the case of the children's centre, built) projects.

The proper educational use of Rolle is one of the most important projects for Exmouth in years - and, at the moment, its likely future is yet more retirement flats.

I challenge my two Conservative opponents, Hugo Swire MP and County Councillor Bernard Hughes, to exert their influence to get this decision overturned. Exmouth and district needs it.
