I am writing regarding the closure of the Rolle College site. I was so pleased to read in last week's Journal that the Prime Minister will be looking at the proposal and that Hugo Squire MP and several other people are championing the site as a place for further education.Exmouth is a vibrant town for young people to grow up in. I recently visited the Exmouth Festival over several days and was proud to see how our young people contributed towards it and joined in the festivities. They are the future of the town and, in a competitive, ever-changing world, we should be giving them every opportunity to flourish and reach their full potential. For many years Rolle College/Plymouth University upheld these values, producing some of the country's most inspiring young teachers. This hard-earned reputation will vanish if the university sells its main teaching campus to developers rather than accept the bid by local educational establishments. Does the university want to be labelled greedy, ungrateful, selfish and lacking in morals? I understand that the halls of residence will be sold for a substantial profit to developers, but to sell the main teaching campus as well, to the detriment of the town's future and young people, is totally unacceptable. Selling all assets to the very highest bidder should not be the only criteria for the sale of the campus. The university has an obligation to future generations of Exmouth and East Devon. A compromise needs to be agreed by the university so it can retain its well deserved and hard won reputation. N George,Heatherdale, Exmouth.
