THE Highways Agency has helped East Devon's drivers this Christmas by suspending or completing more than two-thirds of roadworks in the district.

A total of 31 sets of roadworks were completed and a further 30 suspended before 06pm on last Monday to help drivers make smoother journeys over the busy festive period.

The move is part of the Highways Agency's commitment to ease congestion, helping drivers to make their journeys safely and reliably.

Derek Turner, Highways Agency Director for Network Operations, said:

"Over the Christmas and New Year holiday people use our motorways and major A roads to visit friends and family, go Christmas shopping and make vital deliveries to shops and businesses across the country.

"The Highways Agency will make those journeys smoother by suspending as many sets of roadworks as we can, and providing up to the minute journey planning advice.

"Before starting winter journeys, drivers should check their vehicle's tyres, oil and water and ensure they are topping up with fuel, as well as checking their route for possible delays and checking the weather forecast. These simple checks are an easy way for motorists to play their part in ensuring driving over the Christmas period is as trouble free as possible."
