RECYCLING and waste collections scheduled for last Friday were cancelled due to the snow but will recommence today and on Christmas Eve.

Council bosses say that landfill waste should be left out in wheelie bins and crews will collect at the first available opportunity.

Other collections are scheduled to continue as normal up to Christmas Day, unless conditions are so bad that the crews either cannot get to work or it is not safe for their lorries to be on the roads.

If this happens, there will be messages on East Devon District Council’s website explaining the situation and there should also be updates on local radio.

A spokesman said: “For Exmouth is that our lorries will be in the town Thursday, and will collect as much as possible – but only from homes in snow and ice-free roads where it is considered safe for the vehicles.

“No one wants to be in the way of a 26 tonne waste truck sliding out of control down a residential road.”

He added that in principle, residents should put bins in the normal place for collection on the normal day.

“If weather prevents crews from collecting, they will collect on the next available day, so please leave bins out.

“The containers now have lids and, in severe weather the food waste should not smell or become unpleasant due to low winter temperatures.”

Residents have been notified by leaflets sent to every home about changes to waste collection days over the Christmas and New Year break.

The collections will be reviewed on a day by day basis and further updates will be available on www.eastdevon.gov.uk.
