A record number of balloons filled the skies above Budleigh Salterton on bank holiday Monday.

More than 700 were released on the town’s seafront as part of the annual event held by the Budleigh and District Lions Club.

Members of the club and visitors released the balloons in the hope that theirs would travel the furthest. In previous years, balloons have travelled as far as Switzerland, Germany and Belgium.

The wait has now begun for the cards attached to be returned.

A fete was also held on the seafront and Lions club president Geoff Paver was pleased the weather held out for stallholders. He said: “It was a record day yesterday with hoards of people and more stalls.

“Obviously the weather made a huge difference and I understand motorists were queuing for a place to park.”
