A man who went to an Exmouth fun fair and assaulted a group of young women, abusing one racially, has been given a suspended jail sentence.
Christopher Price, 19, was sentenced at Exeter Magistrates’ Court following an incident last October, when he attended the fun fair with his girlfriend.
The court heard that Price’s girlfriend had got into an altercation with another girl, and other girls intervened to try and separate them.
Witnesses said Price then entered the altercation, shouting and swearing, demanding to know who had hit his girlfriend, and threatening violence.
The court heard that Price grabbed the hair of a girl and pulled her head down, and pushed two other girls into the railings of a nearby fair ride.
When a friend of the girls asked Price to leave them alone, the court was told Price racially abused her before hitting her on the top of her head.
Price was convicted at a trial last month, which he did not attend, of one count of racially aggravated assault, two counts of assault, and a section four public order offence.
Passing sentence this week, magistrates heard that Price had admitted drinking before the incident, and that the girl he hit had been left with a sore head.
In mitigation, the court was told that Price, now of Dobwalls in Cornwall, was “very remorseful” about the incident, and that he had learned “a bitter lesson”.
Magistrates described the incident as an unprovoked and sustained attack on vulnerable people.
They sentenced Price to 16 weeks’ imprisonment, suspended for a year – to include concurrent sentences for the assaults and for a violation of bail conditions.
Price was also given a supervision order, told to complete 150 hours of unpaid work, and ordered to pay a total of £350 compensation to his victims.
