AN Exmouth charity shop is offering up vocational qualifications for local youngsters if they volunteer.

The area manager for Cancer Research UK in the Parade, Jenny Pebworth, says they urgently need volunteers - of all ages.

They want volunteers to work on the shop floor or to specialise in stock and merchandising in areas including bric-a-brac, jewellery, handbags and accessories to work from just a few hours a week.

She said: "We are finding with more people being made redundant many just want to keep busy even if it is just for a few hours a week.

"We want people of all ages, aged 16 to100. In one of our stores we have a lady of 94 working."

Although the positions are voluntary, if young people are willing to work up to 16 hours a week the charity can offer NVQs in retail up to level 3.

Typically hours are 1pm to 5pm or 9am to 1pm but she said even a couple of hours a week would help: "We have had an assistant manager who has completed level 3 and she works entirely on a voluntary basis.

"We don't turn anybody away, and we have some volunteers with learning difficulties who just do two hours a week. Everyone is welcome."

She added that just four hours a week work was equivalent to 2,000 in cash donations every year: "You don't have to give money to help out - our volunteers are really precious to us."
