The Great Potato Weigh In - As reported by Alex Ruffle, aged 10, Upper Years class, Drake's Primary School, East Budleigh.Yesterday the whole school was very excited. The results of the competition to find the class which had grown the heaviest amount of potatoes was about to begin.Thirteen weeks ago each class planted two potatoes in a tub. This was organised by Mr an Mrs Maynard, so that the school could help the village to do well in the "Britain in Bloom" competition this year. All the classes waited as the tubs were emptied and the potatoes weighed. We were amazed by how many potatoes we had grown as we had started with only two in each tub.The results were: Lower Years, 700g (13 potatoes);Year 2, 840g (24 potatoes);Middle Years, 820g (21 potatoes);Upper Years, 940g (14 potatoes). The Upper Years were delighted they had won the competition. One Upper Years' boy commented: "My heart was beating really fast as our potatoes were being weighed." A perfect project to get people to plant potatoes.
