An application to put up new play equipment in the playground of a village school has been refused by district council planners.

The application, made by Otterton Church of England Primary School, included removing a sunken garden on the site and putting up a ‘multi-use’ games area.

Parish councillors had previously voted in favour of the plans but had also recommended the school put up a fence to protect neighbours’ gardens.

East Devon District councillors refused the application at the development management committee meeting on Tuesday.

District councillor Tom Wright, who was at the meeting, said the application was refused as it was ‘out of keeping’ with the local area and it would ‘adversely affect’ the amenity of neighbours.
