Prison for conman who fleeced 85-year-old

A conman builder has been jailed for fleecing an 85-year-old dementia patient into paying £20,000 for shoddy repairs on her home.

He also took £3,600 from Graham Harrison for roofing works at his caravan at Newport Park, Topsham, which were never carried out.

Mr Barry White, defending, said Darren Scott, 46, of Hele Road, Kingsteignton, carried out valuable work for both victims, but committed the frauds at a time when his building business was failing, his marriage was breaking up and he was struggling to work because of injury.

Scott was jailed for 30 months when he appeared at Exeter Crown Court.

He admitted three frauds, money laundering and making a false statement to obtain benefit, plus being in breach of a suspended sentence imposed in 2012 for swindling a 78-year-old arthritic customer out of £20,000, claiming his wife needed expensive private cancer treatment.
