Residents across East Devon have been remembering The Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip after he died aged 99 on Friday (April 9).

His Royal Highness had a long-standing connection with Devon, having attended the Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, and has visited the area a number of times on royal visits.

He was Captain General of the Royal Marines until 2017, visiting the commando training centre in Lympstone on various occasions.

During a 2009 visit, he met 970 troop and their families.

The prince, who was Honorary Colonel of the Royal Marines, arrived by helicopter and spent several hours at the camp where he was guest of honour at the passing out parade of the King's Squad.

He most recently visited the area in 2012, accompanying The Queen to Exeter as part of her Jubilee tour of the country.

The Union Jack flag will be flown at half-mast until his funeral as a mark of respect.

East Devon District Council chairman Cathy Gardner said the authority would be sending its condolences to The Queen on behalf of the people of the East Devon.

She said: “Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and all members of the Royal Family at this time. The Duke gave many years of service to this country and was a constant companion to the Monarch. He will be greatly missed.

"As a mark of respect all Union Jack flags on East Devon land will be lowered to half-mast including at EDDC’s headquarters Blackdown House, Exmouth Town Hall, Connaught Gardens in Sidmouth and on the seafront at Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth.”

Exmouth Town Council also announced that its flags would be flown at half-mast.

Exmouth mayor Steve Gazzard said: “Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family at this very sad time.

“The Duke of Edinburgh will be remembered for his exemplary service to the Queen and our country.”

The town council has organised an online book of condolences, which people can access via its website: https://exmouth.gov.uk/condolences-hrh-the-duke-of-edinburgh/
