Praise for street cleaner Ian

We may not always realise it, but when we are in clean surroundings our hearts are much lighter. Find yourself in a dirty, litter-strewn area and it is really depressing.

We may not always realise it, but when we are in clean surroundings our hearts are much lighter. Find yourself in a dirty, litter-strewn area and it is really depressing.

The people who keep our streets clean are among the most important in this town and my beloved and I wish to pay tribute to one of them.

His name is Ian and he keeps The Colony swept and free of debris. We have never seen our area so clean, even when we used to do it ourselves ready for Britain in Bloom judging. (Yes, missus, we did. Black bags and brooms and witty ripostes to jeering, that was us).

Nothing is too much trouble for Ian. He will go and deal with windblown rubbish in a street other than the one he is working on, if asked. He once picked up and removed a dead gull which was distressing a lady resident. He's polite, cheerful and efficient. What he is not is a Jobsworth, which makes him worth his weight in gold.

If there are any awards on offer for excellence in his field of work, we commend Ian for the highest.

Ann and Ivan Prior,

75 Egremont Road, Exmouth.
