Power supply marks new chapter for site

Future events held on The Green will benefit from an electricity supply thanks to literary festival organisers.
For the last four years, the festival’s marquee, situated at the Station Road site every September, has had to rely on generators.
The decision was made to put in a power supply at The Green, allowing electricity at future events.
Now, two green boxes have been installed at the site, which will provide up to 45,000 volt amps of electricity.
Sonia Lapwood, director of Budleigh Literary Fesitval, said: “We found that there was no electricity available on that side of Station Road, so had no option but to hire increasingly large and powerful generators at considerable expense.
“These were noisy and there was the constant worry of running out of fuel.
“The decision was made that it would be a very good thing if we could lay on a permanent supply to that side of The Green and make it available to all the other organisations in the town that hold events there.
“The Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival sees this project as part of our remit to enhance the lives of all the people of Budleigh Salterton and our area.”
The project was funded by a donation from an anonymous benefactor and a grant from Devon County Council.
East Devon District Council (EDDC) will manage the electricity supply.
Tom Wright, EDDC ward member for Budleigh, said: “As a former member of the initial literary festival, and having subsequently been closely involved with the ongoing festival for a number of years, I am very pleased that EDDC is continuing its support of this highly-regarded event.”
The festival’s marquee has featured a large bookshop provided by Waterstones, a licensed bar, hot food, live music and book signings.
Any organisation wishing to use the supply should contact Bea Morris on 01395 226961. There will be a charge levied for the electricity used.
