EXMOUTH police are urging drivers who leave their vehicles in rural beauty spots to be vigilant.

The warning is an attempt to prevent cars being burgled while they are left unattended in isolated spots.

Drivers are being reminded to lock their vehicles securely, remove all valuables and not to leave anything on display that could tempt thieves.

Crime prevention officer Nick Farrell said theft from vehicles was low in East Devon compared to the national figure.

He said the reason for the low figures was a combination of proactive policing, the support of partner agencies and vigilant members of the public.

The Exmouth police officer said car crime tended to increase during the summer - and the police were keen to beat the rise.

The officer said: "Vehicles left in rural areas are particularly vulnerable.

"Leaving things like loose change, bags, coats, mobile phones and satellite navigation systems on display all attract the inquisitive thief, often leaving the vehicle owner with hundreds of pounds of damage and many ruined days of inconvenience."
