POLICE in Devon are warning motorists to travel only if necessary this morning following a spate of collisions across the county.

Rain has fallen on top of sheet ice result in a very slippery road surface.

Collisions have been reported on the A38 and A380 and on numerous minor roads across the South and West of Devon.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesperson said: "Given the number of incidents this morning it may not be possible to an officer to attend the less serious incidents although they will attend the more serious collision.

"If motorists have to travel, they are advised to keep their speed down and leave a far greater braking distance than normal.

"Many side roads will be treacherous, as they have not been treated.
