A TIP-OFF from residents alerted by wanted posters saw officers descend on Topsham in search of a suspect.

A man was arrested at 3.20pm in Fore Street on Thursday, after police cordoned off the area from escape and unleashed sniffer dogs.

The search began after a Topsham resident, wary after leaflets calling for vigilance were dropped through post boxes by PCSO Percy Giles, called 999 after spotting suspicious activity in Hamilton Road.

Topsham PC Ian Geoffrey, one of the arresting officers, said: "This was only possible because neighbourhood watch dropped the leaflets into people houses. For the police this is a big victory."

No charges have been laid, while enquiries remain ongoing.
