The police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was thrown from her horse while riding through Woodbury.

Police have issued an appeal for witnesses after a 49-year-old Exeter woman was thrown from her horse in Woodbury.

Officers believe the horse was startled when either a either a motorcycle or car, possibly carrying a boat or a canoe, passed the animal.

The police said the incident happened in Parsonage Lane at around 3.20pm on Sunday June 5.

The rider suffered a back injury and was left severely bruised and shocked, the police said.

The horse was also left bruised and shaken.

PC John Larcombe-Ford said he was keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or seen a vehicle startle a horse at the same time the incident occurred.

He urged drivers to be aware of horses on roads.

PC Larcombe-Ford said: “I have dealt with two similar incidents and it is very fortunate in this case that both the horse and rider will be okay.

“Sadly, a previous case resulted in the death of a horse.

“The Highway Code advises motorists to give horses at least as much room as you would when overtaking a car.

“In addition, you should slow down and pass wide and slow.

“Give them plenty of room and be ready to stop.

“Do not scare animals by sounding your horn, revving the engine or accelerating rapidly once you have passed them.”
