EXMOUTH police have called for improved facilities for youngsters as they prepare to host their own summer fun for youngsters.Neighbourhood team leader Sergeant Nick Southern has lamented a lack of high quality playing fields and equipment as officers stage a six-a-side football tournament to provide a chance for kids to meet and stay healthy. Police secured new goalposts for the Crescent in Littleham two weeks ago, and are continuing a footballing summer.Monday will see Exmouth Rugby Club's Imperial Road ground come alive for the second day in a row. A football tournament is open to teams of 11 to 17 year-olds from across Exmouth and the district. The competition will follow the much anticipated Exe Fest music event, aimed at an alternative, younger crowd.Elsewhere kids struggle to find a space to play, with park facilities in Brixington and Littleham short of high standard.Neighbourhood team leader Sergeant Nick Southern added: "I don't know why but a lot of activities close in summer. Playing fields in Littleham and Brixington aren't great, and youngsters want something to do."It is also a shame that we have facilities like the playing fields at Rolle which will sit unused. We have been assured they will not be built on, but for now we are doing what we can to keep kids occupied without having to put their hands in their pocket. "The Rugby Club were great and offered to help us straight away, and we thank all our sponsors too."Royal Marines from Lympstone Commando Base have offered to help on the day, while Tesco will provide a free barbecue.Sandy Bay has offered sponsorship, along with local businesses Tony Pryce Sports, Halfords, Blockbuster, Thorntons, Budgens, Exeter City FC and Game, who have all given prizes.Youngsters aged 11 to 17 are invited to form a 6-a-side team, registering at Exmouth Police Station, for the tournament starting 10am, Monday, August 11, at the Rugby Club ground in Imperial Road. For more information contact PC Southern on (08452) 777444.
