AN Exmouth businessman has been hailed a hero after his selfless actions prevented a boat from being smashed to pieces. Greg Tonkin, of Tonkin Materials Testing, in New North Road, spent an hour-and-a-half in waist-deep water on Monday night battling to keep an adrift boat from smashing into the Withycombe Brook wall, at Mud Bank Lane.Boat owner Mr Tonkin, 52, saw the vessel was in danger of being damaged, pulled on a wetsuit, called the coastguard, waded into the river and held the boat off the wall until help arrived.Mr Tonkin said he was forced to hold the boat because there was no anchor to secure it."I am a boat owner myself so I didn't want to see it get broken up," he said.Exmouth inshore lifeboat crew member David Preece, who helped tow the stricken vessel back to Exmouth marina, said Mr Tonkin's actions saved the drifting boat from being damaged."What he did was very noble," said Mr Preece. "Having his own boat broken up once, he wasn't going to let someone else's pride and joy get smashed up so he held it off the wall until the lifeboat arrived.
