Planning permission for a 28-metre-high wheel on Exmouth seafront was granted by district planners, just before its scheduled removal.

The wheel, operated by MI-Wheel on East Devon District Council’s (EDDC) Beach Gardens, was originally given a 28-day temporary permission, but a planning application was then submitted for an extension, to end on September 3, with removal by September 6.

However, EDDC’s development management committee did not have a meeting when it could consider the application before September 5, with the wheel allowed to stay as officers recommended approval.

At the meeting, Councillor Bruce de Saram said: “The wheel has been a very splendid thing, and many people have enjoyed it.”

Committee chairman Councillor Mike Howe said: “I move from the chair that we approve this, even though it’s not there anymore.”
