Plans to extend a care home have been backed by Exmouth Town Council's planning committee.

The plan is for 15 new bedrooms to be provided at Amberwood Nursing Home in Exeter Road, taking the total number from 19 to 34.

Speaking at this week’s town planning meeting, Councillor Fred Caygill said: “There’s obviously a demand for homes of a certain type for elderly people that require them.

“When you look at what’s been developed up there with the Co-op and garage I don’t think traffic is a major issue.

“I think there’s a reasonable footprint for the extension.”

Planning committee chairman Councillor Lynne Elson said: “I’ve looked at the area and it’s not on the side where there are houses.”

Permission to extend the care home was previously granted in 2007, but has now lapsed.

East Devon District Council will decide on the new application.
