An application to build 17 new residential apartments and three new business units in Exmouth has been backed by the town council.

Councillors voted to give their support to the proposal for land to the rear of New Street at a meeting of the town council’s planning committee this week.

The amended plans include 35 per cent affordable homes with associated amenity and parking facilities and a new vehicular access.

Previously the council’s planning committee had twice objected to the application citing concerns over access and the lack of affordable home contribution.

The committee agreed that these issues have been rectified.

Councillor Robert Masding said: “The applicant appears to have answered the concerns raised and there is a significant number of affordable housing.

“It’s a difficult piece of land to know what to do with – I think this is a viable use of this land.”

East Devon District Council will make the final decision on the application.
