Phone mast upgrade gets the go-ahead

Planning permission for an upgraded telephone mast, which could provide improved mobile phone services in Budleigh, has been granted by East Devon District Council.

Telecommunications firm EE applied to upgrade its mast at Cricket Field Lane, saying it would facilitate new 3G and 4G coverage for the area.

Budleigh Salterton Town Council’s planning committee previously voted to object to the plan, citing concerns about the possibility for increased wind noise, the mast’s scale and height, the potential loss of amenity which would be caused to neighbours, and the effect of the mast on the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

However, town planning chairman and district councillor Alan Dent, and district councillor Steve Hall, subsequently said that having seen revised plans, they were happy to support the scheme, in line with district planning officers’ recommendations.

Officers said that, despite the objections which had been raised by residents, they felt the plan was acceptable in the context of local and national planning policy.

The district council then granted approval.
