East Devon District Council (EDDC) has asked people to avoid a ‘dangerous area’ of Exmouth beach after a sinkhole appeared.

Residents and tourists have been told to stay away from a site at Orcombe point, that has been cordoned off by the police, while South West Water resolves the issue.

A spokesman from EDDC said: “East Devon District Council has been made aware of the appearance of a large sink hole today at Orcombe Point in Exmouth.

“Our StreetScene officers have been on site and have cordoned off the sink hole, which is a potentially dangerous area, and we are asking people to stay well clear of the site until the area is safe.

“There is a South West Water pipe running underneath this section of the beach and South West Water is aware of the sink hole and is making their way to the site to resolve the issue.”
