VISIT Devon is on the search for passionate Devonians prepared to declare their love for the county in a national campaign to promote Devon to the rest of the UK.

The group is searching for talented locals to promote the county - with a £10,000 prize for the winning tourism ambassador.

In a series of open auditions to be held this month in Barnstaple, Exeter and Plymouth, a judging panel including celebrity chef Michael Caines, will be searching for the ultimate Devon ambassadors, people with an unparalleled love for Devon who are willing to go out and shout about it.

Three finalists will be chosen from the auditions and given a budget and the task of promoting Devon to the nation for a period of one month in January 2009, with the ultimate goal of attracting more visitors to the county. The person or group that delivers the most successful publicity campaign will be awarded a prize of £10,000.

Everyone and anyone with a passion for the county is invited to come along to the auditions; young* or old, individuals, groups or families. The expert judging panel will be led by celebrity chef and hotelier Michael Caines and will also include Nicola Poultney, CEO of Visit Devon.

Auditions will be taking place at the following locations and times:

* Tuesday November 25, Barnstaple Hotel, Barnstaple, 10am - 5pm

* Wednesday November 26, The Abode, Exeter, 10am - 5pm

* Saturday November 29, National Marine Aquarium, Plymouth, 10am -5pm

Visit Devon's Chief Executive Nicola Poultney offers her tips for hopefuls: "In our 'X Factor' style auditions we are searching for people who are outgoing and prepared to share their love for the county and their secrets on why Devon is such a special place to visit for business or leisure. We are hoping to find the county's finest ambassadors who are prepared to do whatever it takes to engage the nation and tempt more visitors back to Devon!

"There are no strict guidelines for the auditions - just come along and show us your passion and knowledge, in any shape or form. Whether you have a song to sing, a poem to recite, or simply just want to share a few of your ideas with us on how you can help spread the word that Devon is the place to be, we can't wait to meet you."

Michael Caines said: "We all know how great Devon is, that's why we live here and who better to promote Devon than Devonians themselves. This is the perfect opportunity for some of our most dedicated and creative residents to share their love for Devon with the rest of the nation. I'm really excited to be part of this campaign and I'm looking forward to meeting the great talent of our county."

The lovemydevon campaign has been launched by Visit Devon with the aim of promoting Devon as a year round quality visitor destination. The campaign has been funded by over 30 tourism organisations across the county together with Devon County Council, the Devon Association of Tourist Attractions (DATA) and Devon Farms.
