Parking fee increase in Topsham

Drivers will face a big increase in charges at two Topsham car parks after a review by the city council.

A report put forward to the council’s executive recommended that parking tariffs at the Topsham Quay and Matthews Hall car parks should be increased, to bring them into line with other Exeter car parks, which had previously seen higher charges.

The changes will see the cost of an hour’s parking at the sites increased from 80p to £1.20, and the cost of two hour’s parking more than doubled to £2.20.

The cost of long-stay car parking is set to rocket, with more than five hours parking at Topsham Quay increased from £1.80 to £10.80.

Charges at the Holman Way and Tappers Close car parks will be unchanged.

Councillor Rachel Sutton, lead councillor for sustainable development and transport, said: “Councils rely on car park charges for a significant amount of their income and we are no different.

“We have to get the balance right and, at the same time, encourage people to use other more sustainable modes of transport.”
