IF the Community College's sixth form swells to more than 850 by 2014, as predicted by governors, it could cost households hundreds of pounds extra a year in bus and train fares.

Council leader John Hart admitted that, if numbers did go up and students were forced to study at Exeter College, in Axminster, Honiton or Ottery St Mary, parents would have to take the hit.

The average cost of travel is thought to be about £250 a year and Cllr Hart said: "School travel isn't a statutory obligation by the county council," he said.

"We would only subsidise those families on income support.
