THE OWNER of Exmouth's bowling centre expects construction work to restart in the New Year after technical problems resulted in a temporary development standstill.

Mark Quinn said he could understand that a lack of activity on the site had 'fuelled all sorts of alarmist rumours' with people in the town.

He said the difficulties, which he failed to specify, had forced his construction team to take a break from work. Mr Quinn added: "I can assure people, I fully intend to complete the project as soon as I can.

"Once these technical problems have been resolved, we expect to be back on site as soon as possible in the New Year.

"In the meantime, I would like to thank everyone for their patience as we work on completing this exciting and iconic building.

"When you embark on a building project of this magnitude, it does not come without any problems."

Speaking to the Journal last July, John Staszewski, the bowling centre's architect, and Mr Quinn, said they hoped the complex would be open at the end of this year.

Mr Staszewski said the delay would be worth the wait once people are given the opportunity to use the centre.

It will feature a restaurant on both the upper and lower-floor floors; a children's play area and function rooms with views across the beach which can be used for weddings or parties.

The centre will also include a lounge area for families and a climbing wall for teenagers and adults.

Mr Staszewski said: "The large function room will cater for more than 300 people. Collectively, with all the (function) rooms combined, we can cater for 900.

"It will have wonderful views of the Esplanade - an idyllic, picturesque setting for people to have parties.

"Hopefully its opening will act as a launch-pad for further development in this part of the town.

"We are looking forward to it being completed and people coming down to enjoy the facilities.
