Eccentric duo Otway & Barrett play farewell gig in Topsham

Band with grass-roots cult following promise an entertaining evening as part of their farewell tour

“An evening that will stir the soul, excite the senses and leave you clamouring for more” is the possibly tongue-in-cheek promise from John Otway and Wild Willy Barrett, who are playing at Matthews Hall, Topsham on Sunday, September 16.

It is also the last chance to see the crazy pop/punk/folk/anything goes duo in action, as they are calling Time on their 40-year musical partnership.

Despite Barrett’s outstanding musicianship, playing a huge variety of stringed instruments, and Otway’s lyrical flair, the pair have never courted mainstream success, although they had a couple of deliberately oddball hits in the 70s. Instead they have always preferred to swim against the tide and cultivate a grass-roots cult following who are attracted by their eccentric originality.

Sunday’s concert could well increase Otway and Barrett’s local fan-base just as they prepare to break up – which, knowing their sense of humour, is probably exactly what they want.
