On the buses...

I was very interested in your item “Passengers call for more buses”, Journal, January 30) featuring Matthew Wilson’s campaign to get more frequent buses on the 56 route.

It is an issue that I have campaigned on as a town councillor in Halsdon ward, which this route runs through, and as a county council candidate for Woodbury and Lympstone.

The 56 bus is the only public transport serving Woodbury and Higher Lympstone, and needs beefing up for many people to consider it worth their while to use the bus.

Thanks to Matthew, I now know how well-used the rush hour buses serving Exeter Airport are, giving people in Exmouth and around the opportunity to get to work there without their cars.

Even more reason to both increase the frequency, and give hope that we could get an evening and a Sunday service.

Two positive pieces of news about local buses – firstly, thanks to Stagecoach, we now have up-to-the-minute single deck buses with good access for disabled people on the 56 route and the 157 to Sidmouth.

Secondly, Exmouth Town Council has now approved a Parishes Together bid to refurbish 12 of Exmouth’s ageing and tatty bus shelters.

It would be great news if our buses see an increase in passengers locally.
