VILLAGES throughout East Devon are invited to enter a competition to be crowned the best in the UK.

VILLAGES throughout East Devon are invited to enter a competition to be crowned the best in the UK.

The UK Calor village of the year competition invites villages from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland with a population of 5,000 and fewer to battle it out to become the United Kingdom Calor Village of the Year.

Some 12,000 English villages are eligible to enter the 2009 UK competition.

Entry to the competition is through county events held nationwide, where villages can be nominated to represent that county in the national competition.

Competition manager Suzanne Weir said: "Calor village of the iear is a progressive competition and we're constantly looking for ways of raising the bar for villages as well as bringing the competition to the notice of more communities.

"We have recognised that while village communities across the UK face very different issues, they tackle their problems with the same community spirit.

"This competition is about celebrating what they have in common and what brings them together in the face of adversity."

Details of the local competitions in England can be found on the competition website at www.calorvillageoftheyear.org.
