ILLUMINATED signs for the new Tesco Express store in Rolle Street, one of which would overlook the caf quarter, have been refused by town planners in another set back for the supermarket giant.

Councillors on Monday rejected an application for front and rear illuminated signs and a rear directional notice, at the former Job Centre, writes David Beasley.

It follows planners recommending refusal earlier this month for a cash point - because of the saturation of ATM's in the area - and for a new shop front because it was out of keeping with the area.

One Exmouth resident from Parkside Drive said: "With the rejuvenation of the Strand...why do we want to see large Tesco signs glaring at us at the rear of the building, especially when you are sitting in the caf quarter, trying to enjoy a peaceful drink?

"What an absolute eyesore to inflict on us. Surely the front is enough, leave the tranquility of the caf quarter and the new Strand alone."

Rolle Street convenience store owner Philip Rainbird, of Shakespeare Way, said: "...the local authority has refused permission on several applications for projecting illuminated signs on the grounds that they were unnecessary...

"Tesco has applied for two identical projecting signs, which will not fit in with other nearby premises and would look unsightly.

"Also, I cannot see any justification in the application to install an illuminated sign at the rear of the property, along with a directional sign. These signs will be in full view of the Strand Gardens..."

Town manager Tony Collins said as an 'overall direction' to improve the look of the town centre, he felt that reducing the number of illuminated signs was important.

"The use of a non-illuminated signs here should serve adequately.

"I also have concerns about... illuminating the sign at the rear of the building adjacent to the caf quarter.

"I do feel this would detract from the space around the caf quarter area."

Planning chairman Lynne Elson said: "...we can honestly say it is not in keeping having an illuminated sign in the caf quarter.
