There are no plans to install a traffic light-controlled crossing outside Exmouth’s new M&S store, county highways officers have said.
Members of Exmouth Town Council previously called for a toucan crossing to replace the existing zebra crossing in Marine Way, after a constant stream of shoppers on the store’s opening weekend in April reportedly saw traffic backed up as far as Summer Lane on the edge of the town.
Devon County Council highways officers subsequently carried out a traffic survey at the site, but they say a new crossing will not be put in place.
A Devon County Council spokesperson said: “There are no current plans to install traffic lights at the Marine Way pedestrian crossing near to the new Marks & Spencer Foodhall.
“We are currently reviewing the results of the video survey. Post-scheme monitoring of traffic and pedestrian movements like this is standard practice for new developments.”
