‘No need’ for speedwatch near Exmouth seafront

A proposed community speedwatch scheme to combat speeding motorists near Exmouth seafront will not now go ahead, after survey results suggested it was not needed.
At this week’s Exmouth Town Council meeting, Councillor Bill Nash said a second survey had been carried out on Carlton Hill, which has a 30mph speed limit, with 4,462 vehicle movements recorded, but only 46 vehicles recorded as speeding, and only two exceeding 50mph.
Cllr Nash said Exmouth Police Inspector Antonia Weeks therefore said there was no further action needed.
Cllr Nash said: “The residents won’t be very happy in the area.
We were hoping speedwatch would not necessarily catch people, but slow things down, but it won’t take place now.”

Cllr Nash did add that further surveys could yet reveal a need for a speedwatch scheme in other parts of Exmouth.
