Organisers of a new fortnightly market in The Strand, Exmouth, have addressed concerns it could hit vendors trading out of an established indoor base just yards away.

Exmouth Market Association will host some 50 stalls with its inaugural event in the town on Saturday, September 3.

However, bosses of the separate Exmouth Indoor Market have expressed fears over any potential crossover with its traders.

Daniel Szarowicz, co-director of Exmouth Market Association, said its venture’s aim is to complement any existing businesses.

He added: “The layout of the market is key to addressing the problem, and sourcing the products for the stalls so there will be no direct competition. We want to work in union with traders to encourage as much footfall as possible, which in turn generates income for the market and existing traders.

“We are doing a very high-quality market and we want to work with the community. It is key not to upset any one.”

Jerry Miller, co-owner and manager of Exmouth Indoor Market, hopes Exmouth Market Association will avoid hosting similar stalls.

He said: “We are very concerned about the new market. We have not been approached by Exmouth Market Association. The danger is that it could affect the indoor market negatively. I can’t believe they are going to try and make sure every market is not the same as here in the indoor market. We pay our business rates all year, so we are concerned.

“The traders of Exmouth would welcome any initiative that brings trade to the town - as long as it does not have a detrimental effect to existing business.”

The new market will feature food, drink, a designated arts space and a performance area.
