Topsham needs a new town crier to ring the bell.

Topsham could be left without a town crier - if no-one applies for the current vacant position.

There have been no applications for the role of Topsham town crier, Liz Hodges, the woman leading the selection process, has revealed.

Liz, the owner of Route 2 Bikes, is appealing for residents to apply now, as the deadline for applications is Saturday, May 7.

She said: “We have no applications so far to become Topsham’s next town crier, which is a shame. The role is very important and puts the town on the map.

“I’d say to people not to dismiss the role, as it is a great way to meet new people. We are looking for people with a good voice.”

The Journal reported how there would be an open audition on the balcony of Matthews Hall on Saturday, May 21.

Previous incumbent Keith Smith and his deputy Ben Turner have stood down.

Mr Smith, who had been Topsham’s town crier since 2009, resigned on health grounds.
