BUDLEIGH Salterton's youngsters last Thursday celebrated the much-awaited opening of the town's new youth club.Eighteen young people piled through the doors of the Venture Hall, to spend the evening hanging out with their friends and taking advantage of the indoor facilities laid on by the Budleigh Community Youth Project. The session was run by youth worker Andy Shiach, who is part of Devon County Council's youth service team, based in Honiton. He was supported by two volunteers from the town. Youth club committee member councillor Malcolm Florey said: "It was a really successful opening. "The young people, who have already produced the rules for the club which cover the standards and behaviour expected, were active in putting all the equipment together, preparing food and refreshments from the kitchen and helping to tidy up at the end. "They worked together as a team to achieve all of this. "There is now much to build on, as we look to the future."The idea of the youth club was dreamed up by Budleigh teenagers twin sisters Claire and Rachael Haystier and Robyn Whittaker, who since December 2006 have worked tirelessly to put the plan into action. l Anyone from the town who would like to be involved as a club volunteer is asked to contact Malcolm Florey on (01395) 446806.l The Youth Club is open from 7.30pm until 9pm, for 13- to 18-year-olds throughout the year.
