COUNTY bosses have insisted that the Strand's new shelter will compliment the area's nine listed buildings.

Exmouth based company Paul Humphries Architects Ltd have been commissioned to design the new 400,000 shelter.

The company was shortlisted from architects across the South West and selected by Devon County Council, East Devon District Council and Exmouth Town Council.

The building will provide a space for events and festivals, and will feature an outdoor performance stage facing the gardens and a public shelter.

A county spokesman said: "The contemporary structure will aim to compliment the architecture of the other buildings in the area, as there are nine listed buildings in the immediate vicinity.

"Design competitions like the one run by Devon County Council for the building project at Exmouth Strand is a good example of Devon leading on good practice as it is recommended the Government Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment for securing a successful design for new buildings."

Councillor Eileen Wragg, Devon County Councillor for Exmouth Littleham and Town, said: "The design was chosen because the materials used will add to the spacious effect which will be created within the Strand. The building will add a modern dimension to the older buildings surrounding the area, with sustainability and conservation at its heart.
