THE owners of a Budleigh Salterton seafront cafe have gone back to the drawing board to achieve their dream of turning it into an evening restaurant.Longboat Cafe owners Brent and Jane Hushon are looking to expand and redevelop their cafe business to create a place where people can eat a meal while soaking up the sea views. Some feared the plans to create a new Budleigh Salterton tourist attraction had been pulled completely when it was found Mr and Mrs Hushon had withdrawn their application. This week Mr Hushon said his plans to build a two-storey glass-fronted building overlooking the Jurassic Coast were still in the pipeline - but had gone back to the drawing board to incorporate new ideas. He said an amended planning application was due to be presented to the district council by mid-September.With a new 'inspirational' architect on board, Mr Hushon said the plans had advanced and developed from the original application.Mr Hushon said the response and support over the proposed development had been 'fantastic'.He said: "It hasn't failed. We are making amendments in the design. There aren't massive changes. There's more glazing. "Ideas have evolved and there are a couple of things I have changed my opinion on."Budleigh Salterton town councillor Caz Sismore-Hunt had said she was 'sorry' the application had been withdrawn."With the right application, it could be a good thing," she said. The original application was lodged in September last year and involved demolishing the existing cafe. The plan was to incorporate a district council shelter to the side of the new design - which would offer a first-floor restaurant and ground-floor cafe.A month later it suffered a setback when the town council backed the idea of a restaurant, but refused to recommend the application. Town councillors said the district council should not lease the land and the plans were an over development of the site and out of character with the area. The Otter Valley Association said it supported the Hushons' restaurant idea, but said the original application failed to blend in with its surroundings.l What do Journal readers think of the idea of a new seafront restaurant and cafe at Budleigh?
