Dave Williams has opened his own outdoor activity shop in Budleigh Salterton after becoming frustrated at having to travel to Exeter for bike supplies

A chance meeting with a neighbour has led to a former therapist to open a shop in Budleigh Salterton dedicated to one of his passions.

Dave Williams, 48, had been looking for an empty premises in Budleigh for his outdoor activities shop after becoming tired of travelling to Exeter for outdoor accessories such as bike parts.

After a discussion with neighbour Harry Carter, Dave has opened his new shop, Budleigh Outdoors, in premises which used to be part of Carters Hardware, in High Street.

He said: “Talking to people in the town, it was clear no one had done something like this in Budleigh for 25 years.

“I think it’s needed in town long-term and it will be a good investment.

“The response has been absolutely fantastic and I have had people saying ‘about time’ ‘brilliant’ and ‘good idea’. People have actually walked in the door just to shake my hand.”

Before moving to his current home in Winston Road, Exmouth, he lived in Station Road, Budleigh, having moved to the town two years ago.

It was while living in the town that he had a conversation with Harry Carter which made his vision for accessible outdoors accessories come true.

“Trying to find a shop was my first port of call, said Dave.

“I talked to my neighbour Harry Carter and managed to come to an agreement.”

Before coming to Budleigh two years ago, Dave was a family therapist after previously being a mechanic.

He regularly visited the town as his mother lived in Budleigh for 15 years before she died.

After moving to Budleigh, Dave has been going on regular bike rides with his fiancée, spending as much time as possible outdoors.

He added: “I love the outdoors and people will always need other things that have to do with the outdoors.”

As well as offering outdoor activity accessories, Budleigh Outdoors will offer bike parts and hire.

Dave also said: “I try to do as much as I can to do with the outdoors in a finite amount of space – if there’s anything people want that I don’t have, I will try to get it.”
