New homes approved for site at Cranford Club

Plans to build five homes on land at Cranford Sports and Fitness Club have been approved by district bosses.
The application, for outline planning permission, had originally been submitted for five homes, but was then amended by the applicants to read ‘up to ten’.
However, this change was opposed by Exmouth Town Council, which said it would be ‘overdevelopment’, and although East Devon District Council (EDDC) has now approved the application, a condition of the approval is that no more than five homes can be built.
In a report, EDDC planners stated the proposal for up to 10 homes was ‘not achievable or reasonable’ at the site, but say five homes ‘could be accommodated without appearing cramped or out of character with the area’.
The homes would be built on an unused field to the right of the club’s entrance from Salterton Road, which is screened by a line of trees. It was previously said that the sale of this land to developers would secure the club’s future, and EDDC said this would offset the building of houses on the site, which is designated for sport and recreation in the East Devon Local Plan.
