Exmouth Carnival as we know and love it could be under threat - unless new volunteers are found to run it.

That’s the message from the current organisers, several of whom will be standing down after this year’s event.

The carnival has been running for more than 30 years, and last year’s event broke records with more than 1,000 participants and up to 8,000 spectators.

Secretary and treasurer Justine Payton, one of those leaving the carnival committee, said: “It’s really important that people come on board now, so that Exmouth can continue having a great carnival.”

Justine says it is important new members join as soon as possible, so they can learn the ropes from the existing organisers, who are happy to pass on their knowledge.

Justine, procession organiser Sandi Steer, and committee member Carol Steer are those due to leave, and they are three out of only six committee members who attended the carnival’s recent annual meeting.

Justine added: “Year on year it’s been built up and it would be nice if that could be continued. We are one of the largest carnivals in Devon, and we have a carnival that has a big local entry base from social clubs, schools and scouts and things like that, which is great - it’s what the carnival’s all about.

“You get an immense amount of satisfaction and pride at the end of the evening. It’s something that’s highly sociable and a great deal of fun.”

Adding her support, Exmouth mayor Maddy Chapman said: “The girls worked really hard last year. It took an hour-and-a-half for the carnival to go past, with fabulous floats, and there were hundreds of people.

“It’s got to be good for the town, and I’m sure there are some people out there who would love to take part.”

This year’s carnival, along with the associated fun day, will take place on October 8. This will be preceded by the spring fun day in The Strand on May 14.

Justine says, ideally, new volunteers would sign up before the spring event, so they could pick up how everything is run throughout the year.
