A NEW café at a Withycombe garden centre has been given the backing of town planners.

A NEW café at a Withycombe garden centre has been given the backing of town planners.

Owners of Greenfingers Garden Centre, on Pound Lane, had applied to build an on-site café and open sided plant display building, an extension to the gazebo and a new replacement covered footbridge.

The plans were backed by town manager Tony Collins, who said it would boost business, and by town councillors and neighbours.

One resident from nearby Scott Drive said: "As a local family business (the centre owner) Mr Aymes is a knowledgeable horticulturalist who is always helpful on gardening issues with good quality plants on sale, but he needs to be able to compete with the various other garden centres in Exmouth.

"All the other garden centres in Exmouth have café's which attract many customers, Greenfingers would benefit if refreshments were available."

Another resident from Hayley Close said they would 'be delighted' if the centre got a café.

And Mr and Mrs Plummer of Partridge Road also backed the plans.

The plans will now be considered by district planners.
